Running out of battery at the wrong moment can derail a shoot, and fumbling with multiple chargers is never ideal. With this in mind, Tilta has introduced their NP-FZ100 and NP-FW50 batteries along with a dedicated charging case, aiming to simplify the process. Let’s have a look.

Tilta is known for their camera accessories, including everything from rigs like their Hydra Alien Mini to smartphone accessories to camera cages for cameras like the Canon C400 and the Blackmagic PYXIS 6K. Expanding their lineup, they’ve now introduced a practical new addition—batteries with a dedicated charging case.

Portable charging station

The Tilta Charging Case is designed for both Sony and third-party NP-FZ100 batteries (as well as the NP-FW50 used by older Sony camera models) and has four slots for simultaneous charging. In addition to storing batteries securely, the case can also serve as an organized charging hub, reducing cable clutter. According to Tilta, a full set of four batteries in the case can provide up to 13 hours of recording or approximately 2,400 photos, though actual performance will depend on real-world use.

The charging case also supports 45W PD Fast Charging – the NP-FZ100 batteries charge in 3 hours, and the NP-FW50 in 2.1 hours. The company claims this is 68% faster than a standard single charger. It weighs 176 g (0.4lbs), and the dimensions are 121.5 x 57 x 76mm (4.8 x 2.3 x 4in). Note that the charging case does not have an internal battery and must be connected to an external power source to charge batteries.

NP-FZ100 and NP-FW50 batteries with USB-C charging

The Tilta NP-FZ100 and NP-FW50 batteries are designed for Sony cameras, and both offer direct USB-C charging. This eliminates the need for a dedicated charging dock, a feature that can be especially useful for travel or on-location shoots where carrying extra gear is impractical. The batteries are designed to be fully compatible with Sony cameras without triggering pop-up warnings, a common issue with third-party power solutions.

Another key feature is the built-in battery level display, which clearly shows remaining power. The batteries also have multi-core protection, allowing them to operate reliably in temperatures from -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F).

Practical and convenient

Tilta focuses on convenience with this setup. Direct USB-C charging reduces the need for extra accessories, and the charging case streamlines power management. How it compares to Sony’s own batteries and chargers will depend on durability, charge cycle longevity, and real-world performance. But for shooters looking for a more flexible and organized power solution, this could be worth considering.

Price and availability

The portable charging station and batteries are available now for preorder. The charging station is priced at $29, the NP-FZ100 USB-C Battery (2400mAh) is priced at $39, and the NP-FW50 USB-C Battery (980mAh) is priced at $16.

For more information, visit Tilta’s website.

What features do you look for most in camera batteries—longer runtime, faster charging, or something else? Would a dedicated charging case help you stay more organized on set, or do you prefer individual chargers? Let us know in the comments!

Bun-G-Ring – A New Method for Mounting Filters Without Tape https://www.cined.com/bun-g-ring-a-new-method-for-mounting-filters-without-tape/ https://www.cined.com/bun-g-ring-a-new-method-for-mounting-filters-without-tape/#comments Tue, 04 Mar 2025 11:28:48 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=373867 A new filter-mounting tool called the Bun-G-Ring has been introduced as an alternative to taping filters onto camera lenses. Using a bungee cord-based system, it is designed to attach filters securely without adhesives. The product was developed by camera assistant Stevie Vos and gaffer Erno Das, who sought a reusable solution after experiencing difficulties with taping filters on set.

When a matte box is impractical due to space constraints or lens compatibility, taping filters onto the lens is a widely used alternative. However, tape can detach over time, especially in hot or humid conditions, and removing it can leave adhesive residue. If the tape fails, filters can fall and break, which can be costly.

Bun-G-Ring, a new way of mounting filters directly to a lens without taping or using a mattebox. Image credit: Bun-G-Ring

Taping filters: a common practice with limitations

The Bun-G-Ring is intended to address these issues by using elastic tension instead of adhesive. It consists of a reinforced polyamide ring with Dyneema-threaded bungee cords designed to hold filters in place. The manufacturer states that the system can be installed in under six seconds and supports stacking up to five filters at once.

Design and materials

According to the product’s specifications, the Bun-G-Ring weighs 61.7g (2.17 oz) and is made from glass fiber-reinforced polyamide and stainless steel. Dyneema®, a material commonly used in aerospace and sports applications, is used in the elastic cords for added strength.

The system is advertised as being compatible with all standard filter sizes, though the practical fit may vary depending on lens and filter combinations. The manufacturer has not specified whether the Bun-G-Ring can be used with all filter thicknesses or if certain setups may require adjustments.

Different options. Image credit: Bun-G-Ring

Development and availability

According to the people behind the product, it was developed over a period of several years, with over 120 prototypes tested before reaching the final version. The design process involved practical testing on film sets to refine its functionality.

The Bun-G-Ring is being distributed exclusively by Second Reef, with two purchasing options:

  • Standard kit (€495) – Includes three different-sized Bun-G-Rings and accessories.
  • Triple kit (€495) – Includes three identical Bun-G-Rings with matching accessories.

More details, including compatibility information and user guides, are available on their official website.

Industry adoption remains to be seen

The Bun-G-Ring introduces a different approach to securing filters, but its performance in professional environments will depend on real-world use, and I am guessing the “taping filters” method is often applied due to improvisational needs on set – and I question whether one will have a Bun-G-Ring available when that spontaneous need arises. Whether it provides a reliable alternative to tape will likely be determined by feedback from cinematographers and camera assistants over time.

What do you think about the Bun-G-Ring? Are you taping filters to lenses regularly?

DJI RS 4 Mini Gimbal Announced with Intelligent Tracking Module https://www.cined.com/dji-rs-4-mini-gimbal-announced-with-intelligent-tracking-module/ https://www.cined.com/dji-rs-4-mini-gimbal-announced-with-intelligent-tracking-module/#comments Thu, 20 Feb 2025 13:01:31 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=372371 DJI RS 4 Mini is a new gimbal for lightweight mirrorless setups. Weighing 890g/1.96 lbs, it can carry payloads up to 2 kg/4.4 lbs. The gimbal is compatible with the new DJI RS intelligent tracking module, which improves subject tracking and supports visual commands. Bringing features known from the flagship RS series, such as the automated axis locking system, or fine-tuning knob, the RS 4 Mini is available now starting at $369.

Although DJI was not the first manufacturer to come with a lightweight one-handed camera gimbal, I think it is safe to say that the DJI RS series (formerly Ronin) is currently the most popular line of gimbals on the market. While the RS models have been getting increasingly compact over the years, DJI wanted to go a bit further and offer a very compact model for small mirrorless setups.

That’s why the company introduced the DJI RS 3 Mini model back in January 2023, combining the maximum payload capacity of 2 kg/4.4 lbs with a compact and lightweight design (weighing only 850g/1.8 lbs). With improved vertical shooting, this gimbal quickly became an appealing option for filmmakers who travel frequently. Today, after roughly two years, DJI announces a next-generation lightweight gimbal – DJI RS 4 Mini. Let’s take a quick look at the details.

DJI RS 4 Mini – gimbal for small mirrorless setups

Compared to the previous generation Mini, the new RS 4 Mini is slightly heavier at 890g/1.96 lbs, which includes the quick-release plate and excluding the tripod. The maximum payload is still 2kg/4.4 lbs.

The gimbal inherited the automated second-generation axis locking system from the flagship RS 4 line. This works for all three axes of the gimbal and helps to speed up the filming, transition, and storage process.

With the third-generation native vertical switching mechanism, the RS 4 Mini features an even faster switching to vertical shooting, according to DJI. Last but not least, DJI added a Teflon coating and a fine-tuning knob for a smoother and more precise balancing procedure.

Source: DJI

In the new Responsive mode, the gimbal responds faster to hand movements upon start or stop, designed to suit fast-moving subject circling shots. Meanwhile, the classic Smooth follow mode provides a fluid gimbal response, ideally for normal subject following shots.

RS 4 Mini gimbal. Source: DJI

Perhaps the most visible new “feature” of the gimbal is the detachable DJI RS intelligent tracking module, which comes with the combo kit.

DJI RS intelligent tracking module

The intelligent tracking module is basically a small box (weighing 19g/0.67 oz) equipped with a camera that attaches to the tilt axis of the gimbal via a quick-release magnetic mount (similar to the one known from the DJI Osmo Action series camera mount).

The module helps with certain automatic features, such as framing and composition. It can also enable ActiveTrack on any camera system or phone with or without the DJI Mimo app. This can keep a human subject in frame up to 10 meters, even in complex environments. Tracking can be enabled with one push of the trigger or an open palm visual command.

Battery and lighter briefcase handle

The built-in 3100 mAh battery supports up to 22.5W (9V, 2.5A) charging so it takes around 1 hour and 50 minutes to fully recharge. The battery then provides up to 13 hours of runtime (which is roughly a 30% improvement from the RS 3 Mini).

RS 4 Mini gimbal. Source: DJI

The new RS Mini briefcase handle (also included in the combo kit) is 20% smaller and 28g/0.99 oz lighter than the current DJI RS briefcase handle.

Price and availability

DJI RS 4 Mini is available right now, and there are two pre-configured sets:

  • DJI RS 4 Mini standard – includes one gimbal, quick-release plate, RS 4 Mini tripod, L-shaped multi-camera control cable, USB-C charging cable, and one screw kit. This kit retails for $369 (around €412.17, including VAT in Europe).
  • DJI RS 4 Mini combo – includes all of the above and adds an RS intelligent tracking module and RS 4 Mini briefcase handle. This combo kit sells for $459 (around €479, including VAT in Europe).

What do you think about the new DJI RS 4 Mini? Have you used the previous DJI RS 3 Mini for filming, or do you use another gimbal model? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section underneath the article.

DJI Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P Phone Gimbals Announced – with New Multifunctional Module https://www.cined.com/dji-osmo-mobile-7-and-7p-phone-gimbals-announced-with-new-multifunctional-module/ https://www.cined.com/dji-osmo-mobile-7-and-7p-phone-gimbals-announced-with-new-multifunctional-module/#comments Tue, 18 Feb 2025 13:00:13 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=372104 DJI Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P are new smartphone gimbals that now feature a built-in retractable tripod, DJI’s seventh-gen stabilization, ActiveTrack 7.0, and they are compatible with the new magnetic multifunctional module. This enhances subject tracking, brings new gesture control, and includes a small bi-color light. The Osmo Mobile 7P also has a built-in extension rod. Both models are available now – DJI Osmo Mobile 7 sells for $89, and the 7P costs $149, including the module.

The Chinese tech giant DJI used to launch a new Osmo Mobile (sometimes also called OM) gimbal for smartphones every year until 2022, when the sixth generation came out. Today, the new seventh generation Osmo Mobile arrives, and this time, it took roughly two and a half years. It seems like DJI wanted to take the extra time to bring some real innovation. For the first time, there are actually two new models, so let’s take a look at the details.

Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P. Source: DJI

DJI Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P

First off, both models now feature a built-in mini tripod that retracts from the grip. The good thing is there is still a ¼” thread at the bottom when the tripod is folded inside the grip. Both gimbals support one-step storage and can hold phones with 6.9-10mm/0.27-0.39in thickness, 67-84mm/2.6-3.3in width, and 170-300g/5.99-10.58oz weight.

The built-in 3350 mAh battery provides up to 10 hours of operation and can be fully recharged via a USB-C port in around 2.5 hours. Both models also support the new multifunctional module (more on that later), but you will have to purchase the module separately if you buy the Osmo Mobile 7. With the 7P, the module is already included.

What are the differences between the models? The 7P model includes more features than the regular Osmo Mobile 7 (the P probably stands for “Pro”), and it is slightly larger and heavier. 7P features the built-in extension rod (maximum length 215mm), while the Osmo Mobile 7 does not (which saves some weight and size – the overall weight is around 300g/10.58oz).

Osmo Mobile 7P control wheel. Source: DJI

The Osmo Mobile 7P further features a side wheel for focal length zoom or manual focus control. Additionally, a long press of the wheel enables control over the fill light of the multifunctional module (adjusting brightness and color temperature).

The Osmo Mobile 7 gimbals are now compatible with the Apple Watch. Using the DJI Mimo app, you can use your watch as a smart remote for the gimbal.

Both gimbals also feature DJI’s seventh-generation stabilization and the ActiveTrack 7.0 technology (when paired with the DJI Mimo app). This enables the gimbal to adjust to track subjects and follow their movements automatically, even in a crowded or active environment.

Smart Capture allows the gimbal to detect multiple subjects, and users can direct the gimbal to lock onto one subject or switch to a different subject with a simple tap.

Multifunctional module

This is a new, magnetically attached accessory to enhance subject tracking. DJI claims it can accurately maintain focus in a crowd or reacquire a subject if they re-enter the frame after leaving briefly. Additionally, the module includes a bi-color light (2500-6000K). The maximum output, according to DJI, is 40 lux (at 0.6m/1.96ft distance).

The multifunctional module. Source: DJI

The module can be controlled using hand gestures to take photos, start or stop recording, activate tracking, or adjust a composition.

  • Showing your palm to the module starts or stops intelligent tracking.
  • Making a “V” gesture takes a photo. It can also start or stop video recording.
  • Making a “Double L” gesture with two hands adjusts a subject’s framing.

Furthermore, the multifunctional module can be used as a microphone receiver. The USB-C port can be used to connect to your phone to deliver audio transmission while providing extra power.

Osmo Mobile 7P. Source: DJI

Keep in mind that using the module will shorten the gimbal battery life. With the Multifunctional Module’s intelligent tracking feature enabled and the fill light off, the operating time is approximately 5 hours. When the intelligent tracking feature is on, and the fill light is set to maximum brightness, the operating time is approximately 4 hours.

Price and availability

DJI Osmo Mobile 7 is available now for $89 (around €102 including VAT in Europe), and the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P (with the multifunctional module included) is available now for $149 (around €163 including VAT in Europe).

iFootage Shark Slider Nano 2 Firmware Update – Adds Multi-Target Function and More https://www.cined.com/ifootage-shark-slider-nano-2-firmware-update-adds-multi-target-function-and-more/ https://www.cined.com/ifootage-shark-slider-nano-2-firmware-update-adds-multi-target-function-and-more/#comments Tue, 18 Feb 2025 10:37:32 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=372092 iFootage has just released a firmware update for their Shark Slider Nano 2, which gives you more control over your slider moves by allowing you to adjust the speed and delay between multiple sliding points. This firmware update also adds a multi-target function, enabling you to register up to four subjects and switch between them with just one tap, a handy feature when shooting interviews or podcasts. So, let’s take a closer look at it!

Chinese manufacturer iFootage released the Shark Slider Nano 2 during IBC 2024, and it made quite some waves at launch. Indeed, this entirely revamped version of the company’s original Shark Slider has a maximum payload of 7kg/15.4lbs horizontally and 3.5kg/7.7lbs vertically; it now has a built-in touchscreen to control the slider, and you can power it via a Sony NP-F style battery or USB-C via a PD power bank with a 60W output capacity. Two versions of the Shark Slider Nano 2 are available: a short one that measures 46cm/18in and a long one that is 66cm/26in.

Aside from its solid technical specs, the Shark Slider Nano 2’s selling point is its integration with DJI’s RS series of compact gimbals, from the RS 2 to the RS 4 Pro. Both companies worked together to create a smooth integration that allows the gimbal and slider to communicate wirelessly and easily create complex motion control shots using no less than four axes: slide, pan, tilt, and roll. You can watch our show coverage video below to learn more about it.

iFootage Shark Slider Nano 2 firmware update

As I mentioned, you can control the Shark Slider Nano 2 via the built-in touchscreen, but you can also control it via your iOS/Android smartphone and the free iFootage Moco App. The App allows you to control the slider and perform firmware updates wirelessly, which is very handy.

With the latest iFootage Shark Slider Nano 2 firmware update, the company added a couple of new features, including:

  • Customize motor speed and hold time: you can set a hold time between 0 to 60 seconds between different points. This allows you to customize your camera’s movement.
  • Multi-target function: you can set up to four different targets/subjects with different in and out points. Then, you can switch between the targets with a single tap on the slider’s touchscreen or within the App. This is especially useful for interview setups and podcast recordings.

Only a couple of months after the release of the iFootage Shark Slider Nano 2, it’s nice to see that the company is already putting some work into launching a new firmware update to improve the product.

Sony TOUGH CFexpress Type A Memory Card Data-Saving Issue Reported https://www.cined.com/sony-tough-cfexpress-type-a-memory-card-data-saving-issue-reported/ https://www.cined.com/sony-tough-cfexpress-type-a-memory-card-data-saving-issue-reported/#comments Sat, 15 Feb 2025 13:18:12 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=371573 Sony has expanded their free repair program for TOUGH CFexpress Type A memory cards following the discovery that more cards may be affected by a recognition and data-saving issue in cold temperatures. The problem, first acknowledged in June 2024, can cause certain CEA-G series memory cards to go unrecognized or fail to save images properly when operating near the lower limit of their recommended temperature range (14°F / -10°C).

Sony’s TOUGH CFexpress Type A memory cards were first introduced in 2022, offering a very solid build, fast read and write speeds, VPG400 certification, and more. Then, in 2023, they introduced the CEA-M models, which you can read about here. But as with all things meant to be better, faster, and stronger, companies occasionally run into issues. This includes SanDisk, which has had their own pains, most recently with the Canon EOS R5 Mark II.

TOUGH CFexpress Type A memory cards affected

Initially, Sony’s data-saving issue was reported for select Tough CFexpress Type A cards in 80GB, 160GB, 320GB, and 640GB capacities (models CEA-G80T, CEA-G160T, CEA-G320T, and CEA-G640T). However, Sony has now expanded the list of affected cards as of January 22, 2025.

Newly included are:

  • 320GB cards with eight-digit lot numbers between 22040001 and 22080110 or nine-digit lot numbers between 220400010 and 220801100
  • 640GB cards with eight-digit lot numbers between 22080001 and 22100136 or nine-digit lot numbers between 220800010 and 221001360

Sony confirms that memory cards with lot numbers starting with “3,” whether nine-digit or ten-digit, are not included in this program. Users can locate the lot number near the bottom of the back of the card.

Repair program is in effect until 2029

The free repair program remains in effect until June 29, 2029, under the terms of the memory card’s original Limited Warranty. Sony advises affected users to back up and erase all data before sending in their cards, as the repair process will result in complete data loss.

For full details on eligibility and how to initiate a repair request, customers should visit Sony’s support website or contact their regional Sony Support center.
