The CAME-TV WAERO Pro headsets aim to simplify on-set communication without requiring a central hub to connect the headsets and bring some significant upgrades compared to the existing WAERO system.

CAME-TV WAERO Pro System avoids congested 2.4GHz frequencies

This new system operates on the 1.9GHz DECT band, avoiding the congested 2.4GHz frequency range used by numerous wireless devices on set. This frequency selection provides a dedicated communication channel insulated from interference that often plagues production environments. What’s nice is that the WAERO Pro supports auto frequency hopping when encountering interference, in order to provide a more stable connection.

Maximum range, sets, and battery life

The system provides an operating range of up to 518 meters (over 1,700 feet) in open environments, decreasing in locations with significant physical obstacles. For productions requiring expanded coverage, the system supports connecting up to 9 headsets in a single network. There are various WAERO Pro systems available, but the classic one includes five pre-paired headsets, eliminating the frustrating setup process accompanying many comparable systems.

Battery performance delivers up to 15 hours of use on a single charge, which can get you through an entire shooting day. This operational time addresses a common pain point in production—the need for reliable headsets that sustain through long shooting days without requiring frequent battery swaps. The master headset will last for 5-10 hours, so you should carry a replacement battery for it. A battery will be fully charged in 2.5 hours and has a capacity of 1100mAh.

Noise cancellation and AEC are also implemented, which is essential in headsets to filter out disturbing background noise in calls. CAME-TV claims “zero latency” for real-time communication, another plus.

Grouping and all-call function for team leaders

The system supports establishing separate groups within a network, but it can be easily switched between the groups at any time.

The CAME-TV WAERO Pro comes with a so-called “all-call function” for team leaders using the master headset. That function allows them to communicate both with the A and B groups simultaneously by pressing the MF button on the master headset. This is, of course, super useful when everyone on set needs to be summoned for a meeting, lunch break, or whatever will affect the whole team, without having to repeat the same message in both groups.

Compatibility with other CAME-TV products

The system is also fully compatible with all other CAME-TV intercom systems, including Kuminik8, Came-Nano, and WAERO.

Editorial perspective

When I first heard about CAME-TV many, many years ago, I came to love their Boltzen Fresnel lights, and I use them as kicker lights for many interviews to this day. The company has since entered many other areas, including wireless intercom, and its further expansion into production communication technology represents a logical progression. The WAERO Pro addresses several pain points in production communication—weight, battery life, and frequency interference—that challenge filmmaking teams.

However, the audio quality and durability remain to be tested against industry-leading communication systems that have undergone years of field testing. The true test of any communication system comes from extended use in challenging production conditions.

As production crews seek streamlined equipment solutions that reduce setup time and increase reliability, the WAERO Pro appears to be a promising addition to the ecosystem of tools facilitating the increasingly complex communication needs of modern film production.

Market position, pricing, and availability

Priced at $555 for the 5-headset package, the WAERO Pro sits in the budget range of production communication tools, yet it’s very competitive for what it delivers – typically, full-duplex systems will cost considerably more. This pricing places it also below premium systems from established manufacturers like Clear-Com and others.

In general, pricing is quite simple: Essentially, every individual headset costs $111, and as you can pair up to nine of them, the largest set containing these 9 headsets costs $999.

If you’re looking to invest in such a model, then now might be a good time as CAME-TV is running a sale on their wireless intercom series, including the CAME-NANO and CAME-KUMINIK8.

The system is currently available through CAME-TV’s webshop and select professional video equipment retailers.

Xvive XV1-R Portable Stereo Audio Recorder Announced With 32-Bit Float Recording – Only $89.99 https://www.cined.com/xvive-xv1-r-portable-stereo-audio-recorder-with-32-bit-float-recording-announced-only-89-99/ https://www.cined.com/xvive-xv1-r-portable-stereo-audio-recorder-with-32-bit-float-recording-announced-only-89-99/#comments Wed, 29 Jan 2025 15:22:48 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=369843 The XV1-R Portable Stereo Recorder from Xvive records 32-bit float audio and is suitable for musicians, filmmakers, podcasters, and content creators. It features a built-in stereo microphone array with preset menus for quick setup. Let’s take a closer look.

32-bit recording is now available to a wider crowd of users with the introduction of the XV1-R recorder from Xvive. Although nearly identical in shape and features to the previously released Zoom H1essential Portable Audio Recorder, the XV1-R is priced $10 lower, potentially making 32-bit float recording even more popular.

For those who are not familiar with the benefits of recording in 32-bit, here are the key advantages:

  1. Virtually unlimited dynamic range and headroom: The 32-bit float format can represent an enormous range of values from extremely quiet to extremely loud without clipping or distortion. Even if you record too hot or too quiet, you can adjust post-production levels without losing quality.
  2. No need to set gain staging perfectly while recording: Since there’s essentially no clipping point, you don’t need to carefully set input levels. This is especially valuable for field recording or live situations where you can’t predict peak levels.
  3. Better noise floor characteristics: The floating-point nature means you maintain good resolution even with very quiet signals, unlike fixed-point formats where quiet sounds use fewer bits.

Features

Talking about recording in the 32-bit float format, this is the recorder’s key feature since it means you effectively never have to worry about setting proper input levels or audio clipping during recording.

A few other notable benefits:

  • Compact size that fits in a pocket
  • Simple one-button recording operation
  • Can be used as a USB audio interface
  • Accepts both line and mic level inputs

The XV1-R can record on a range of SD and MicroSD cards: MicroSD (up to 2 GB), SDHC (up to 32 GB), and SDXC (up to 128 GB). A 32GB card is included in the package. According to the company, the powering options include 2 AA batteries (12-hour runtime) or USB-C.

The XV1-R can be mounted on top of a DSLR/mirrorless camera and used as a stereo sound recording device for video. The recorder can generate slate tones, which can later be used to accurately sync the audio and video when editing if needed.

Like with the Zoom recorder, I like the idea of having a small on-board speaker when you don’t have headphones or earphones nearby or want to check or identify recordings.

Xvive XV1-R vs. Zoom H1essential

As noted earlier, it seems as if the Xvive XV1-R recorder is competing head to head with the Zoom H1essential 2-Track 32-Bit Float Portable Audio Recorder. Now, we haven’t tested any of those in-house, so we cannot comment on the differences in audio quality, but this aside, here is a quick overview of what to expect when it comes to differences or shared features:

Price:

  • XV1-R: $89.99
  • H1essential: $99.99

Key features (both):

  • Built-in stereo mics
  • 32-bit float recording up to 96 kHz
  • USB audio interface functionality
  • Pocket-sized design
  • WAV recording
  • 3.5 Line/Mic input

XV1-R advantages:

  • Lower price ($10 less)
  • Simple one-button operation
  • Onboard X/Y Mics handle up to 130 dB SPL (vs 120 dB SPL for the Zoom recorder)

H1essential advantages:

  • Clearer LCD display
  • Accessibility features for the blind or visually impaired
  • Some might argue that Zoom has a more established brand reputation

Hollyland LARK M2S Announced – Mini Concealed Wireless Microphone Set https://www.cined.com/hollyland-lark-m2s-announced-mini-concealed-wireless-microphone-set/ https://www.cined.com/hollyland-lark-m2s-announced-mini-concealed-wireless-microphone-set/#comments Thu, 09 Jan 2025 13:12:34 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=367476 Hollyland LARK M2S is a new 2.4GHz wireless microphone system with dual transmitters and multiple options for receivers. There is a camera receiver with 3.5mm analog output and USB-C output, along with minimalistic receivers for mobile phones (USB-C and Lightning versions). The transmitters are designed to be minimalistic without a logo and are capable of recording up to 24-bit audio, but there is no 3.5mm input and no internal recording.

The Chinese company Hollyland known for wireless video and audio devices just announced an affordable 2.4GHz wireless microphone system, the LARK M2S. There is one particular feature of this new audio kit that I find quite interesting – the concealed design approach.

What’s that box with a huge logo on your shirt?

With a lot of online video content in recent years, affordable 2.4GHz wireless mics have become very popular. One problem with this is the common interference issue of the 2.4GHz frequency, which often needs to be fixed by using the transmitters’ internal recording.

The other intrusive aspect of using these mics is how present they are in the frame. Sure, most of them (but not all) have a 3.5mm connector for a lav mic, but let’s be honest, most of the creators do not use this option. Just slapping the mic transmitter on a shirt is easier and faster. The issue is, that most transmitter units are rather large and they often feature a huge logo of the manufacturer. Personally, I don’t like this and try to cover the logo somehow when using the transmitter alone, but I reckon most have gotten used to seeing this.

That is the reason I find the Hollyland LARK M2S wireless microphone system quite interesting as the design of its transmitters tries to make them as concealed as possible.

Hollyland LARK M2S wireless microphone system

The design of the transmitters features a titanium alloy clip. On the “visible side” of the clip there is only the built-in microphone capsule which measures 1.3cm x 0.63cm and does not include any visible logo. On the other “hidden side” of the clip, there is an enclosure that includes the rest of the electronics of the transmitter along with the built-in battery. The idea is to clip the mic on the shirt so that only the tiny microphone is visible in the frame. The whole TX unit weighs only 7 grams.

LARK M2S wireless mic system. Source: Hollyland

Hollyland claims that the LARK M2S has a maximum range of 300m (984 ft., unobstructed line of sight). As I mentioned above, the 2.4GHz frequency often gets too crowded and introduces interference. The manufacturer further says, they equipped the LARK M2S with a so-called RF interference-resistant circuit to minimize interference in the populated 2.4GHz bandwidth. I am curious if this gets confirmed in real-world reviews.

Unfortunately, the audio transmitters do not support internal recording, so I hope the anti-interference system works well.

When it comes to battery life, according to Hollyland, each transmitter can operate for up to 9 hours. With a fully charged charging case, the total maximum operation time is 30 hours.

The LARK M2S has a sampling rate of up to 24 bit/48 kHz, a 70dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and a 116dB maximum sound pressure level (SPL). The system also supports an environmental noise cancellation (ENC) to minimize background noise. This can be activated by a button located on the transmitter or the receiver.

The new dial design of the camera receiver in the combo version gives easy access to power, pairing, mute, and volume controls, with options for high, medium, and low levels. The camera receiver unit supports dual output so you can record the audio simultaneously via the analog 3.5mm jack connector in the camera and the USB-C output on a second device if needed.

With the LarkSound App, you can take full control, checking audio settings, volume levels, noise reduction (there are two levels – strong and weak), and battery life.

The LARK M2S Microphone System is now available and comes in three pre-configured kits:

  • LARK M2S Combo (with camera RX + USB-C RX + USB-C to Lightning cable) is priced at $149
  • LARK M2S Mini Combo with camera RX + USB-C RX is priced at $139
  • LARK M2S with USB-C is priced at $119

RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3) Wireless Microphone System Released – Pro Features, Colors, and Affordable https://www.cined.com/rode-wireless-go-gen-3-wireless-microphone-system-released-pro-features-colors-and-affordable/ https://www.cined.com/rode-wireless-go-gen-3-wireless-microphone-system-released-pro-features-colors-and-affordable/#comments Tue, 10 Dec 2024 11:02:48 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=365244 RØDE has just released the latest generation of their compact wireless microphone system: the Wireless GO (Gen 3). This dual-channel wireless microphone system now comes with plenty of professional features inherited from the RØDE Wireless Pro, including 32-bit float on-board recording with up to 40 hours of recording time, an increased transmission range of 260m/850ft, locking 3.5mm microphone input on both transmitters, up to seven hours of battery life, Intelligent GainAssist technology, and much more. So, let’s take a closer look at it!

Three years after introducing the Wireless GO II, Australian audio specialist RØDE is back with its successor: the Wireless GO (Gen 3). However, in the meantime, the company launched the Wireless Micro and Wireless PRO variations of their compact wireless microphone systems. As more and more manufacturers enter the wireless audio market, RØDE had to step up their game by including many features of the PRO version in this third generation, but will it be enough?

RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3) – features

The Wireless GO (Gen 3) is a compact and lightweight dual-channel wireless microphone system that measures only 46.5 x 44 x 20mm/1.83 x 1.69 x 0.78in – the dimensions are identical for both transmitters and the receiver – and ticks the scale at 35g/1.23oz for the transmitters, and 36g/1.27oz for the receiver.

Similarly to its predecessor, this third generation consists of two transmitters and one receiver. You can choose to capture two separate audio channels with the receiver or combine both channels into one stereo option for seamless recording on downstream cameras or recorders.

The RØDEWireless GO (Gen 3) is now available in 14 different colors

RØDE Wireless Go (Gen 3) – what’s new?

From the outside, the RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3) doesn’t look vastly different than its predecessor. However, you’ll probably notice that the microphone input on both transmitters has been upgraded to a 3.5mm TRS locking connector, which is handy and way more professional when plugging in a Lavalier microphone.

Also, the receiver’s 3.5mm audio output can now be used as headphone output, which allows you to monitor your sound if your camera doesn’t have a headphone output. Furthermore, the screen at the top of the receiver is, according to RØDE, brighter and easier to read.

Indeed, most of the changes and improvements are located inside the units. First of all, the transmitters’ omnidirectional built-in microphones have been upgraded with new capsules and preamps. These built-in microphones are the same as those in the Wireless PRO.

Next, while the Wireless GO (Gen 3) still uses the same 2.4GHz wireless transmission “Series IV” technology as the Wireless GO II, the transmission range has been increased from 200m/656ft to 260m/850ft. Also, it is compatible with all RØDE Series IV devices, including RØDECaster Pro II and RØDECaster Duo, RØDECaster Video, Wireless PRO, and Interview PRO.

The most considerable improvement is probably the addition of 32-bit float on-board recording directly within the transmitters, with a 40-hour capacity. Also, RØDE included the Intelligent GainAssist technology, which automatically adjusts the audio output gain so your camera’s audio doesn’t clip.

You can engage a safety channel at -12 dB for even more safety and peace of mind. This means that your left audio channel will be at your set audio level, while the right one will be 12dB lower, ensuring that your camera’s audio never clips.

You can connect the Wireless GO (Gen 3) to the RØDE Central app (mobile or desktop) for easy configuration and setup. Lastly, the transmitter and receivers all feature a USB Type-C port to charge them, offload on-board recordings, or use it as an audio interface, with a maximum battery life of 7 hours.

Pricing and availability

The RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3) is available now for $299/€281.91, and it comes with a carrying pouch, a charging hub, furry windshields, and USB-C/Lightning/TRS cables. A separate Charge Case+ is available for $89/€89.61.

If we compare the Wireless GO (Gen 3) to the RØDE Wireless PRO, which retails for $362, I’m a bit confused with this new offering. The PRO model has the same features, though with the added benefit of Timecode capabilities, and it comes with a charging case and two Lavalier mics for less than the Wireless GO (Gen 3) with the Charge Case+.

Audiio Hans AI Introduced – Natural Language Music AI Search Tool for Creators https://www.cined.com/audiio-hans-ai-introduced-natural-language-music-ai-search-tool-for-creators/ https://www.cined.com/audiio-hans-ai-introduced-natural-language-music-ai-search-tool-for-creators/#respond Fri, 06 Dec 2024 11:54:32 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=364905 Imagine typing a brief description of a scene from your project, and a list of royalty-free music appears that fits perfectly. Hans AI from Audiio does just that, giving creators a natural language search for music that works for a scene.

Audiio has an extensive library of royalty-free music and sound effects from a network of independent artists and publishers. They’re available in over 180 countries, and content creators of all types can take advantage of Audiio’s wide range of professional offerings. This year, they introduced Audiio Elements, which lets you edit individual components of any song on their platform, and LinkMatch AI helps find music quickly, while Originals offers original music from some of their top artists.

How Hans AI works

Hans AI uses prompts from the creator to suggest a song that will fit a scene. Moreover, while Audiio can recommend music from their library based on a pasted link to a song, Hans AI does it based on a brief description of the scene or finding music similar to a score or popular song.

Searching for the right royalty-free music can take time – hunting around a website, sampling the music, and then adding it to your NLE timeline to see if it fits. Hans AI does it in seconds and can comprehensively list music that best fits your scene or project. Hans AI also showcases unique results that may elevate the scene further.

For example, you may have a scene involving the preparation and enjoyment of an intimate candlelit dinner or an action movie score. Simply type the description into the Hans AI search function, and a list of music options appears. From there, it’s easy to listen to the suggested song selections and give them a thumbs up or down. With an Audiio license, you can download the song and add it to your project.

You can also be more specific and ask Hans AI to find a song similar to a score from a movie or TV show or a song from an artist or band you admire.

Taking Hans AI for a test drive

We tested Hans AI to see how it performs; it is fast and intuitive. The results for “intimate candlelit dinner” were very good to excellent. I also asked for music similar to the main score in Jurassic Park, and the songs were in the spirit or very close. And not just the primary score from the Dino classic but other pieces of music from John Williams’ brilliant score.

Finally, I typed in different artists and songs, and it presented music in the vein of those bands and singers. For example, searching for music similar to Radiohead presented songs in the spirit of the band. Songs similar to those from Taylor Swift had even better results, both with and without vocals.

Audiio has a wide range of genres, from pop to country, rock, and more. The songs are very professional and quite good. They will fit into any type of project, including narrative, corporate video, a commercial, wedding, etc. Nothing sounded like standard stock music.

DJI Mic Mini Microphone Launched – Super Lightweight, 48-Hour Battery Life, and More https://www.cined.com/dji-mic-mini-microphone-launched-super-lightweight-48-hour-battery-life-and-more/ https://www.cined.com/dji-mic-mini-microphone-launched-super-lightweight-48-hour-battery-life-and-more/#comments Tue, 26 Nov 2024 13:00:13 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=364099 DJI has launched the Mic Mini, a super lightweight wireless microphone that weighs just 10 grams. It’s built to be versatile and has a long battery life, reliable transmission, and various wearing options. It works well with different recording setups and is compatible with cameras, smartphones, computers, and tablets, along with DJI’s ecosystem of devices (Osmo Action and Pocket series, for example). The Mic Mini should appeal to creators at all levels, so let’s have a look at the details.

DJI is well known for their drones, but their product line extends far beyond. We’ve covered several of their offerings many times, most recently the versatile DJI Air 3S Allrounder Drone (with our video review), the Goggle N3 (an alternative to the Goggles 3), and the OSMO Action 5 Pro (with a video review too). Today, we’re focusing on the new DJI Mic Mini, a microphone that weighs just 10 grams, less than half of the DJI Mic 2. Because it’s so lightweight, it can be worn on a collar or a thin shirt without causing any pulling. It can be clipped, attached with magnets, or worn on a lanyard.

Mic Mini – features

  • Battery life: An all-in-one charging case holds the receiver and transmitters, and when fully charged, the setup is good to go for 48 hours. A quick 5-minute charge will offer an extra hour when needed. The receiver and transmitter fully charge in approximately 100 and 90 minutes, respectively.
  • Two-level noise canceling technology: Basic mode for quiet, indoor settings, and Strong mode that focuses on vocals by cutting ambient noise in louder environments.
  • Windscreen: Reduces wind noise for cleaner audio capture outdoors.
  • Automatic limiting: Lowers volume if audio input is too high, preventing clipping and distortion.
  • Adjustable gain: Quickly adjust gain using the receiver’s dial – five level options provide precise control over sound input.
  • Automatic power management: The transmitter enters sleep mode when no signal is detected. The Mimo App allows for setting an automatic power-off timer to conserve battery life.

Sound quality

  • Omnidirectional audio recording: Captures sound from all directions.
  • Dual transmitter pairing: The receiver can connect with two transmitters simultaneously, enabling recording from multiple sources.
  • Dual channel recording: Supports Mono and Stereo modes for greater flexibility and control.
  • Transmission Range: Transmits audio up to 400 meters under controlled conditions.
  • Safety Track: The DJI Mimo App offers a backup track recorded at six dB lower than the main track to safeguard against audio issues like clipping.

Wireless recording with OsmoAudio

The DJI Mic Mini is very versatile and connects directly to DJI products like the Osmo Action 5 Pro, Osmo Action 4, or Osmo Pocket 3 without a receiver. It can also connect directly to smartphones via Bluetooth, also without a receiver, so you can use your phone to capture audio recordings with third-party filming apps, according to the company.

In addition, users can connect the DJI Fly app to the DJI Neo drone and the DJI Mic Mini using Bluetooth to record audio and overlay it with their aerial footage. Using the app, propeller noise is eliminated, audio tracks are merged with the footage, and sound should be good even shooting low-altitude vlogs.

Finally, when connected via the Camera Audio Cable (3.5mm TRS), it syncs power on/off with the camera. With a smartphone, it enables external playback without unplugging and can be charged from the phone. The receiver also supports simultaneous charging of both the smartphone and itself when connected to a power source via USB-C.
